NOTARY PUBLIC - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

Q: I am a Medina County resident and am interested in becoming a notary public.: What do I need to do?

A: You need to pick up a new notary packet from any of the four locations of the Medina County Clerk of Courts.: The packet contains the application and all the information necessary to begin the process.: You will need to take and pass the notary test to become a notary public.

 

Q: Where are the offices of the Medina County Clerk of Courts located and what are their hours of operation?

A: The four locations of the Clerk of Courts are as follows:

LEGAL DIVISION:

1.       Medina County Court of Common Pleas, 93 Public Square Room 129, Medina, Ohio: 44256

(Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.)

TITLE DIVISIONS:

2.       Medina Auto Title, 976 North Court Street, Medina, Ohio: 44256

(Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.; Sat 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.)

3.       Brunswick Auto Title, 1434 Town Center Blvd, Brunswick, Ohio: 44212

(Mon-Fri 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.)

4.       Wadsworth Auto Title, 123 Broad Street Suite B, Wadsworth, Ohio: 44281

Q: When and where can I go to take the test to become a notary public?

A: See the information on the Notary Test Schedule below.: This information is also included in the new notary packet.

 

Q: I am currently a notary but my commission will be expiring soon.: What do I need to do to renew my notary commission?

A: You need to pick up a notary renewal packet from any of the four locations of the Medina County Clerk of Courts.: The packet contains the application and all the information necessary to begin the process to renew your notary commission.: Please allow 4-6 weeks processing time.

 

Q: How soon can I renew my notary commission?

A: It generally takes about 4-6 weeks, but you can submit an application for renewal as early as 90 days prior to the expiration of your current notary commission.: If you receive your new commission prior to the expiration of your current commission, continue to use your current expiration date until the new one commences.

 

Q: My notary commission has expired.: Can I still renew my commission or do I have to restart the whole process?

A: There is a grace period of 90 days after your commission has expired within which you can still renew your notary commission.: If it is after that date, you must begin the process over again by picking up a new notary packet and re-taking the test.

 

Q: After I receive my notary commission from the State of Ohio, what do I need to do?

A: By law, you MUST record your notary commission with the Clerk of Courts in order for it to be valid.: Take it to the Medina County Courthouse located at 93 Public Square Room 129, in Medina, Ohio, along with a photo ID and payment of $7.00 (check, cash, or money order) to record your notary.: Credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, and Discover) are also accepted for an additional $3.00 fee.: (We do NOT accept American Express.)

Q: I live in Medina County but work in another county.: Where should I record my notary commission?

A: By law, you MUST record your notary commission in the county in which you reside.: If you would also like to record it in another county, you may do so, but it is not necessary.: NOTE:: If you are notarizing a document that will be sent out of the United States, let the people know the county where your notary commission is recorded so they can go to the correct county to have the notary commission verified.

 

Q: I am currently a notary but just recently moved to Medina County from another county in Ohio.: Is there anything I need to do?

A: You will not need to do anything until it is time for you to renew your notary commission.: You will then need to pick up a notary renewal packet from the Medina County Clerk of Courts to renew your commission.

 

Q: My name changed after I received my notary commission.: Is there anything I need to do?

A: You will need to visit the Ohio Secretary of State's website at www.sos.state.oh.us to download the application for amendment of notary information.: There is a fee of $2.00 for them to update their records and issue you a new notary commission in your correct name.: This new commission will then need to be recorded with the Medina County Clerk of Courts.
